Solarcentury's 10th Anniversary

Solarcentury is the UK's leading solar energy company, based on Lower Marsh in Waterloo.

Established in 1998, the 120 staff, now based in London, Milan, Madrid and La Rochelle in France have been celebrating the company's 10th birthday this year. Specialising in the design and supply of solar energy for buildings, Solarcentury sees Waterloo as a big aspect of the company's personality, and despite doubling in size over the past few years it is reluctant to be based anywhere else.

Their commitment to Waterloo aside, what can Solarcentury do for you? The company works with house builders large and small, public sector organisations, in particular schools, and charities to reduce their C02 emissions using solar energy to generate electricity (photovoltaics) and heat water (solar thermal).  Their innovation team has come up with clever and simple ways of putting solar on buildings, such as solar roof tiles and cladding.

As the government is trying to encourage the uptake of renewable energy, they have launched a scheme called the Low Carbon Buildings Programme which entitles the public and charitable sectors to a 50% grant for solar power.  This is well worth looking in to, as with the rising cost of energy prices it's making increasingly good financial sense to invest in solar. Particularly if you're a school.

Solar4Schools is a Solarcentury scheme to enable schools to both install and learn about solar energy.  With the generous support of The Co-operative Group and other private organisations schools can now get solar systems for free – they've already given 100 away! The Co-op has now opened nominations for more schools to receive free solar systems as part of a new £1million fund for renewables. This will fund more than 60 solar power systems for schools across the UK. So, it is inviting nominations from its members from now until 5 November. Full details on the scheme and how to apply are available at: www.co-operative.coop/greenenergyforschools.  More information on Solar4Schools on the website www.solar4schools.co.uk

If you're a home owner or business looking into solar, there may also be grants available. So check their website for more information www.solarcentury.com
