Waterloo Quarter BID have been successful in an application for funding to refurbish the traditional market barrows in Lower Marsh, providing all market traders with a matching tarpaulin and a lick of paint. The O2 It’s Your Community scheme, which provides funding of up to £1,000 for projects that benefit the community, have agreed to fund the improvements.
There are currently only 12 permanent traders in a total of 77 available market pitches on the street, creating a patchy appearance with the remaining traders struggling to keep the market alive. The BID recognises the importance of the market as a resource for local people providing affordable and convenient shopping.
The BID has been working with Lambeth Council to develop a long term strategy to improve the market. This additional funding will provide an immediate further boost to the development of the market and in turn the look and feel of the street. |
