The winners of the BEX 2008 International Awards were announced in June, with The Cut scheme named as winner of the Best Project Collaboration Award.
The Cut project, which was completed in April this year, was delivered through a successful collaboration between Cross River Partnership, Southwark and Lambeth Councils, Transport for London, and local resident and business groups, including the Waterloo Quarter BID.
The redevelopment addressed problems on the street, such as narrow footways, poor quality lighting, vehicle dominance and lack of greening, through a series of major physical improvements and sustainable initiatives:
Installing solar powered parking meters
• Planting 48 trees
• Turning the route into a low speed (20mph) zone
• Installing 38 new cycle racks
• Widening and repaving existing footpaths
• A new waste management system
• Improving lighting
• Fitting 6 new benches
• New pedestrian signage
The Awards invite more than 200 major organizations in both the public and private sector from more then 40 different countries to exchange best practice on the themes of sustainability, collaboration, innovation and efficiency.
