As you probably know, the new smoke free regulations come into effect on Sunday 1 st July 2007. The legislation, which enforces a no smoking policy in public places, workspace, public and work vehicles, is intended to reduce the amount of second hand smoke in enclosed public spaces, ensuring a healthier, more pleasant environment and giving those who wish to quit the support to do so.
As a business owner/occupier, you have been given the legal responsibility to ensure that your premises and work vehicles are smoke free zones. As part of this, you are expected to, communicate to staff and customers about the new smoke free regulations, display no-smoking signs and remove any existing indoor smoking rooms. Local councils will have responsibility for enforcing the new law, introducing enforcement officers to ensure compliance is maintained once the legislation comes into force in July. Failure to comply with the law will be considered a criminal offence and could result in fines of up to £2500.
