A consultation meeting was held on 22nd May by the Lambeth Market Office with the Lower Marsh market traders at which proposed changes to the future market layout, commodity regulations and the advertising of pitch vacancies were discussed. Further to an independent review of Lambeth Markets undertaken in 2007, a paper was put together by Lambeth Market Office, setting out some options for re-organisation of the market. This was presented to the traders at the meeting.
The main options consulted on were as follows:
1. Creating of ‘zones’ within the market for:
a) Visiting markets (e.g. weekly farmers’ market)
b) ‘fresh market’ – i.e. fruit and vegetables
c) ‘food court’ (hot food sales) and space for outdoor seating on Lower Marsh
2. Bunching together’ of the existing market traders into one area to avoid the current sparse appearance of the market
3. Regulation of the number of commodities on offer to encourage more specialisation of traders
The positioning and quality of the market has an obvious impact on the shops and businesses surrounding it. Therefore, WQBA are keen to ensure that business views are also taken into consideration during this consultation. We have arranged with the Market Office for the opinions of the local businesses to be sought and incorporated into any decisions made on taking forward any of the above options.
Lower Marsh businesses will by now have received their consultation papers along with a copy of the 2007 Transforming Markets report. If you have not received a copy of the consultation and you would like to, please get in touch at
