It's not only Lambeth's markets that are struggling to reach their full potential in the current consumer climate. With some noteable exceptions, street markets are experiencing a nationwide decline, with soaring pitch vacancies leading to the ultimate closure of many ancient markets. On 25th April, Lambeth Council held a conference to address these issues on a borough-wide basis, with a view to developing an action plan to reverse the fortunes of its markets, most notably Brixton market and of course, Lower Marsh.
In line with the views of the Lower Marsh Market Group and opinions voiced by BID members, Waterloo Quarter has lobbied strongly for the following improvements in Lower Marsh:
assign a dedicated Market Officer for Lower Marsh, with stated hours of operation
produce clear, transparent and published pitch prices, rules and regulations and trading hours
increase investment in publicity of the market
foster closer working with partner organisations, such as Waterloo Quarter, to support projects to improve the market
political commitment to Lower Marsh - don't let the market be a poor relation to Brixton
The new Wednesday Market Day on Lower Marsh, being organised by Waterloo Quarter, is just one of a series of measures designed to revive the Market as a valuable resource for local workers and residents alike. Interest is beginning to build, with numerous enquiries being received from traders interested in taking a pitch. Our thanks to the brave few, who have spearheaded this project and stuck it out during the quiet initial weeks.
Please show your support to the market, take a break in the fresh air and pick up a bargain or a delicious lunch. Visit the Street Market page for further information on the stalls and traders on Lower Marsh.
