The closure of the Eurostar Terminal at Waterloo will have a significant impact on Leake Street, both regarding its ongoing management and future operation. Whilst Eurostar will have an interest in Leake Street for the next 5 years, as of 14th November responsibility for the street will pass over to Network Rail. The road will also be closed to vehicular traffic.
There are concerns surrounding the implications of this closure to vehicular traffic, not least the creation of a space that may be very attractive to the local homeless population.
To address the issues, Eurostar and Network Rail have committed to upgrading all the lighting in Leake Street, along with reconfiguring the CCTV. Network Rail security staff will also be walking the area regularly.
As the body with the legal responsibility for maintaining this stretch of road, Eurostar are currently considering their options with regard to the possibility of full or part closure of the road at set times during the day.
