Work is almost complete on the first phase of a bi-annual programme of gum-removal and steam cleaning of core streets in the Waterloo area. You may have seen Waterloo Quarter's contractors Gum Clear out and about in the BID area, removing ingrained blobs of chewing gum with high pressure steam lances and using their hot-washer to remove build-ups of grime.
This service has been requested by local businesses, who felt that the Council's baseline street-washing service could be enhanced through a more intensive hot-washing programme.
Gum removal is not currently offered by the Council as a standard service, but this is an issue that is a constant cause of complaint for local businesses. We will be lobbying for the introduction of more gum bins in the area to help address the problem at its cause and are also investigating protective surface treatment products for paving in the area to prevent gum becoming ingrained in the stone. This should enable the gum to be swept away during the standard Council cleansing service.
