Business Advice - Religious Responsibilities

BUSINESS advice from Rachel Krys, director of Waterloo-based Inclusive Employers:

HOW do you respond when a colleague tells you they want to switch their Easter weekend with Eid or Pesach?

Accommodating religious beliefs at work is something all employers have to think about. The Equality Act (http://www.equalities.gov.uk/equality_act_2010.aspx) gives employees protection against direct and indirect discrimination on the grounds of religion or belief.

If someone in your workplace requests time off to observe their religion:
• Show them that you take their request seriously.
• If possible allow the time off – they can make up the time and will appreciate your flexibility.
• If you can’t grant the request give good reasons.
• Encourage colleagues to share what they are doing. The more others learn about different cultures and beliefs, the more understanding they will be.
• Make sure policies are in place to allow for flexibility. It helps all staff, not just those who are religious.

Allowing people to be themselves at work, and showing them that you respect what they care about, leads to more engaged, motivated staff.
