Business Profile - Black Architecture

The boss: Managing Director Paul Hinkin

Describe your business: "We are an architectural consultancy which works with professional organisations to design sustainable buildings."

How many staff do you have? "There are 14 of us and one dog called Hyphen. We always try to have at least one trainee working with us, and we spend a lot of time investing in our workplace culture. We all have lunch together every Friday."

When did you move to Waterloo? "We moved here in October 2009. We came from the City and wanted somewhere with more character but with transport links which were just as good."

How many buildings do you work on each year? "Typically 10 to 15. The biggest project we have on our books at the moment has a £25m construction value."

How do you work with clients? "We really spend time talking to them so we understand exactly what they require so we can make the best possible building to suit their needs. A good example of that would be the work we did for CAFOD (see page 3) in Westminster Bridge Road."

What do you need to succeed in business? "For us it is about striving to continually improve and making sure everybody in the company knows their role and performs to the best of their ability."

Tell us something to impress us: "Kevin McCloud presented us with the Grand Designs Best Eco Home Award a few months ago."
