The boss: Russell Reed, 35.

How many employees do you have: “We have three full time and one part time employee.”

How long have you been running the business? “About 18 months.”

Describe the business in one sentence: “We are a friendly, family run unisex hair salon, with highly experienced staff.”

Tell us a little known fact about the business: “The business has been in the family since 1862. The family used to have a hair salon at the other end of Waterloo Road before we took this shop in the 1950s.”

How many hours a week are you in the salon? “I am here between 25 and 30 hours a week, but I also work as a Hackney Carriage driver.”

How do you attract new customers? “Through word of mouth. We have got a good location but we need to let more people know we are here. About 85 per cent of our new customers are coming back.”

What is the best thing about the job: “Watching a customer look in the mirror and smiling at the end of their haircut.”

And the worst: “Parking in the area can be a bit of an expensive pain.”

What are your plans for the future: "I will hopefully open up the downstairs of the salon to offer some beauty treatments like nails and spray tans. I would also like to add to staff numbers.”
