A refurbishment programme has been agreed for the Westminster Bridge Road railway tunnel by Lambeth's Planning Committee. This will comprise a basic refurbishment package, including cleaning, painting and anti-graffiti treatment of the tunnel walls, improved functional lighting and replacement pigeon proofing. New feature lighting will also be installed to 'paint with light' the structures of the bridge and create a dramatic, artistic treatment for the area.
The tunnel is currently an extremely poor northern entrance to the Waterloo area and creates a hostile and unwelcoming environment for pedestrians. The changes will enable a rapid improvement of the space.
After the initial phase of improvements, the second phase of the project - namely artistic treatment for the tunnel walls to compliment the feature lighting - will be developed as part of the Lower Marsh Regeneration Project. This phase will also look at treatments for the taxi exit road in the tunnel.
These changes have been agreed by the Council following negotiations with local partners, including Waterloo Quarter BID.
