Hotel Developments in Waterloo

There has been an unprecedented increase in the number of hotels planned or under construction in Waterloo. Here is a review of the various stages of development.

There are proposals for a new apart-hotel and supermarket at The Language School on the corner of Lower Marsh and Westminster Bridge Road. This is the latest building being primed for a hotel redevelopment. The Language School, has been vacant for sometime now and last year was occupied by squatters. Planning permission will be submitted later this year for 28 serviced apartments and a retail ground level unit.

An Easy Hotel has been granted planning permission on the corner of Baylis Road and Westminster Bridge Road opposite Lambeth North Station. The former Lambeth Building Society Headquarters which has been vacant since 2006 will be turned into a 78 bedroom budget hotel with a coffee shop and internet facilities on the ground floor. A restriction has been placed on the opening hours of the coffee shop preventing it serving customers after 7pm. Under a Section 106 agreement £145,000 was secured, this will go towards funding a pedestrian improvement scheme in Lower Marsh, Westmister Bridge Road and Frazier Street and contribution to local parks.

The exterior of the Travelodge Hotel at 195-203 Waterloo Road is nearing completion and they expect to remove the final scaffolds, hoist and the tower crane before the end of March. They have just begun work on fitting out and finishing the interior of the building. The hotel will comprise of 279 bedrooms, a bar/café, a 150 seat restaurant and office units. The road adjacent to the hotel, Baron’s Place will be transformed over 14 weeks in two phases. A block-paved‘ shared surface’ with trees and additional street furniture are included in the works to be carried out by Southwark Council’s contractors. A section of the road and footpath will be closed for the duration of the works; they are expected to be complete in June.

The H10 on the Southern end of Waterloo Road is due to open in March. The hotel will have 177 guest rooms, an A la Carte Restaurant, Health and Beauty Area and Lobby Bar. There will also be 4 fully equipped meeting rooms as well as complimentary WI-FI in the entire hotel.
