Works to improve the pedestrian environment at the crossroads by the Old Vic are progressing well, with pavement works outside the Fire Station nearing completion.
The last large area of paving at the perimeter of Emma Cons Gardens opposite the Old Vic is due to start in early June.
Some delays have been experienced along Waterloo Road, as Lambeth Council has been required to tie in their schedules with Thames Water, who are currently replacing the Victorian water mains in the area. Thames Water will be undertaking their last phase of work at the junction week beginning 1st June. New traffic signals equipment will also start to be installed in early June.
Businesses should note that some one-way traffic operation will be required on The Cut (with traffic running west to east) in late June when the new 'raised tables' (raised areas of road to the same height as the pavements) are constructed. We will inform businesses when this is due to take place once a precise timetable has been confirmed by the Council and their contractors.
Practical completion of the whole scheme is expected towards the end of July. The scheme should make a real difference to the area, easing pedestrian movement along Waterloo Road, including south towards St George's Circus as well as between Lower Marsh and The Cut.
