Lower Marsh Regeneration Project
An opportunity has arisen to create a radically improved public space at the heart of Waterloo, using a 'pooled' fund of various local planning contributions. The Lower Marsh Regeneration Project aims to address issues of accessibility on Lower Marsh and re-connect the street with the surrounding area through physical improvements.

Waterloo Quarter BID is working with the project steering group, chaired by Lambeth Council, to ensure that views of local businesses are considered in the development of the scheme and has been appointed to consult with local stakeholders about the strategic objectives of the project.

Design teams will be appointed through a competitive process to produce a scheme that should:
  • create an attractive, high quality environment
  • provide better walking routes for people to get to and from the street
  • improve both retail and market trading in Lower Marsh
  • improve safety
  • be energy efficient and sustainable
  • be accessible and inclusive
  • take into account surrounding developments and streets
  • support the management of a thriving street market

As a complimentary project to the scheme, Lambeth Council is also proposing to out-source the management of the street market to a professional market operator. The aim is to re-introduce a thriving street market to the area that compliments the local retail offer. Waterloo Quarter has been lobbying for improved management arrangements for the street market since the inception of the BID and has been appointed by Lambeth Council to facilitate a local steering group to take forward this process.

Initial consultation of businesses and local residents took place in March 2009. Look out for further consultation taking place in early 2010.
