| Street Audit - tackling the 'grot spots' |
|
Waterloo Quarter has recently taken a new approach to cleaning up the BID area and is actively seeking out ‘grot spots'.
This pro-active approach involves undertaking a thorough weekly audit of the streets in the Waterloo Quarter area and identifying problems such as graffiti, rubbish dumps, broken street signs, street cleansing issues, street lights which aren't working and hotspots for anti social behaviour. It also gives us the opportunity to identify potential areas for public realm improvements such as installing new bike racks.
The aim is to improve the environment to make it a cleaner, safer and healthier environment for people living, working and visiting Waterloo, encouraging them to stay longer and spend their money here.
We have built up good relationships with relevant local authority departments and can get issues resolved very quickly; in the six weeks since we have been running the audits we have reported thirty issues; twenty three of which have been resolved. The remainder are long term aims such as suggested public realm improvements or stubborn problems which require more work to resolve.
With the help of Lambeth and Southwark Councils we've had five dumps and ten pieces of graffiti removed and had four highways repairs completed. We have also resolved four street cleansing issues.
If you have a local ‘grot spot' that you would like us to tackle, then contact Katie Lindsay, Environment and Public Realm Manager' at klindsay@waterlooquarter.org.
