Waterloo Quarter Business Alliance (WQBA) is a business-led organisation, committed to improving the area of
Waterloo
. As an official Business Improvement District (BID), WQBA works with and for businesses, securing funding to deliver a range of projects in the local area to improve economic performance and the physical environment, as well as acting as a voice for businesses to speak directly to organisations such as the Council, Transport for
London
and the Police.
WQBA aims to create a safer and more pleasant trading environment for businesses, and to promote the area to bring in more visitors, whilst maintaining its individuality and unique character.
Since being approved by Parliament in September 2004, BIDs have grown rapidly across the
UK. WQBA was established in the Lambeth area of Waterloo on 1st April 2006 following a successful ballot of local businesses and expanded across the borough boundary into Southwark after a second successful ballot in February 2008, to reflect the more natural commercial area of Waterloo.
A BID generates revenue via a levy paid by all businesses in the area which is subsequently 100% ring-fenced for projects of benefit to local businesses to improve trading conditions. BIDs are an opportunity for businesses to stake a formal claim to the area in which they operate and to generate funding for its long-term economic development.
Led by a Board of local businesses and managed by a small, energetic executive team, the BID's governance is ultimately regulated by the Business Improvement District (BID) Regulations (2004) and at a local level by an Operating Agreement with the local authority.
